Still, they couldn’t get one to go when they needed it the most. It’s almost comical that it took until the final game of the season for the coaching staff to take Noah Dobson off of the top unit and replace him with someone else - in this case, Aho, who immediately looked more mobile and had his head up looking to get the puck on net when he was out there with Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, Brock Nelson and Anders Lee. Sebastian Aho went off for interference at 16:31, and again the Islanders couldn’t build on their lead. The Islanders led 1-0 when Brady Skjei was called for holding at 4:16 of the second period, yet couldn’t convert. The top unit was held off of the scoreboard altogether, with the only goal coming from Kyle Palmieri on the second unit. The worst facet of the Islanders’ game in the regular season bled into the playoffs, and actually reached its low point during the course of the six-game series, going just 1-for-18. ![]() ![]() For now, here’s what went wrong in a first-round series loss to the Metropolitan Division champs. Where do the Islanders go from here? We’ll examine that over the course of the next several days and weeks. While the series was generally tight - Carolina only outscored the Islanders 16-15 over the course of the six games, two of which went into overtime - the Hurricanes earned it. ![]()
